Why This Years Anime Convention Can’t Come Soon Enough

Anime North is just around the corner, and I can already feel the anticipation buzzing in the air. Every year, this convention is a highlight for anime fans across Canada, and 2025 is shaping up to be no different. Sure, we don’t have all the details yet (with about 70 days left, that’s expected), but that doesn’t stop the excitement from building. After all, Anime North isn’t just about panels, merchandise, and cosplay—for me it’s about the Friendship, Fun and Fandom.

One of the best parts of Anime North is introducing people to anime. Some of my friends and family have only heard of anime in passing, maybe recognizing a name or two but never really diving in. That’s where the magic happens. Recommending shows, seeing someone’s eyes light up after watching their first series, or discussing deep themes in anime they never expected—it’s an experience I cherish every time.

These days, there’s a lot of buzz around Spy x Family, and rightfully so. It’s the perfect blend of action, comedy, and heartwarming moments, making it a fantastic recommendation for newcomers. But when introducing young adults, I often steer them toward something darker, something that challenges their perception of what anime is. Death Note is always a solid choice—old but gold. Its psychological depth, moral dilemmas, and gripping storyline make it an instant hook for those who think anime is just for kids.

That’s one of the biggest misconceptions about anime: that it’s all bright colors, exaggerated expressions, and childish antics. While those elements do exist, the medium itself is incredibly diverse. The emotional depth, storytelling complexity, and philosophical themes in many anime often surpass mainstream Hollywood or Netflix content. A show like Attack on Titan makes you question the nature of war, freedom, and morality, while Steins;Gate explores time travel in a way that’s both scientifically intriguing and emotionally devastating. Even something as seemingly lighthearted as Clannad can leave you reflecting on life, loss, and love in a way that few other media can.

Anime North isn’t just about celebrating anime—it’s about celebrating its impact. Walking through the convention halls, you see more than just cosplayers and merchandise booths. You see people forming connections over their favorite series, debating plot twists, and bonding over shared nostalgia. It’s a space where you can be unapologetically passionate about the things you love, surrounded by people who feel the same way.

The best moments come when you stumble upon a conversation about an underrated gem or when someone introduces you to a show you’ve never considered before. That’s part of what makes the convention so special—it’s not just about what you bring into it, but what you take away. Maybe it’s a new favorite series, a fresh perspective on a beloved classic, or simply the joy of seeing someone else discover the magic of anime for the first time.

Of course, there’s the cosplay—arguably one of the biggest highlights. Whether you go all out with a meticulously crafted outfit or throw on a simple accessory to represent your favorite character, cosplay adds another layer of excitement. Even if you’re not dressing up, there’s something amazing about seeing your favorite characters brought to life by passionate fans. The creativity, dedication, and sheer craftsmanship on display never cease to amaze me.

Then there’s the merchandise. Oh, the endless sea of merch! From limited edition figures to handmade artwork, there’s always something tempting around every corner. Every year, I tell myself I’ll stick to a budget, and every year, I fail spectacularly. But hey, can you really put a price on happiness? (Your wallet might say yes, but your heart says no.)

More than anything, Anime North is about the experience. The late-night hotel discussions about anime theories, the spontaneous dance-offs outside the venue, the panels that give you insight into the industry, and the feeling of being in a space where you truly belong—it’s all part of the magic. It’s why we keep coming back year after year.

So, as we count down the days to Anime North 2025, I can’t help but feel grateful. Grateful for the friends I’ve made, the stories I’ve discovered, and the memories that continue to shape my love for anime. Whether you’re a longtime attendee or a first-timer, one thing is certain: Anime North isn’t just an event. It’s a celebration of everything that makes anime special. And I, for one, can’t wait to be a part of it again.
