(Update: Nov 28, 2018 New Menu Items Arrived – Find more out more at bottom of this post)
Toronto’s newest matcha specialty cafe will have you drooling for everything matcha. Located around the corner of Spadina Ave and Dundas St W its situated conveniently in the Chinatown area. Amausaan Uji Matcha specializes in traditional Japanese desserts, the menu ranges from soft serves, crepes, cheesecakes, sundaes and also hot or cold lattes.
Although Japanese oriented the chain actually started in China, made its way to Indonesia and finally here in Toronto.
The cafe has a nice atmosphere and a calming decor with plenty of seating inside – for the location it’s surprisingly spacious.
If you find yourself roaming around downtown (which is common for anyone living around the GTA) you might consider dropping by and trying some of these items in the menu:
1. Matcha Mille Crepe
A Mille Feuille Crepe also known as a 20-Layer Crepe cake is actually an elegant classic French cake that has 20 layers of extremely thin crepes, each separated by pastry cream. The word mille feuille means a “thousand sheets”. You’ll find this dessert light and not overpowering in matcha flavor. If sweet cake is what you’re going for this is the cake you’ll want.
2. Fading Matcha Cheesecake
Exactly as the name states, this cheesecake starts with a strong burst of matcha flavor in the beginning and slowly fades into more of a pure cheesecake flavor at the end. The texture is soft and fluffy – like a cloud, instead of a thick and heavy traditional cheesecake. Despite its name the cheesecake is actually not heavy which makes it a perfect dessert of choice after a big meal.
3. Shiratama Sundae
The sundae speaks for itself. You have the matcha soft serve, sweet red bean paste, shiratama balls and also crunchy waffle cones at the very bottom. For those of you who are curious, shiratama is a type of mochi made from rice flour and adds a unique texture when combined with various treats. Love it!
There you have it!
It’s a place I’d check out again, the convenient location makes it an easy destination for matcha desserts if you’re in the area.
