VOTD: My Favorite Movie (Star Trek vs. Star Wars)

The debate between Star Trek and Star Wars fans has raged for decades. These two iconic franchises represent more than just space-faring adventures—they encapsulate differing philosophies, approaches to storytelling, and the power of fandom. My personal favorite, though, has fluctuated over the years as both franchises have evolved (or stumbled). Let’s explore what makes each unique and how their trajectories offer lessons in sustaining fan loyalty.

In 2009, Star Trek returned to the big screen with J.J. Abrams’ reboot—a film that was both a homage to the original series and a modernized spectacle. It breathed new life into Gene Roddenberry’s universe, appealing to long-time fans and a new generation. Abrams’ approach respected the franchise’s roots while embracing the cinematic language of blockbuster storytelling. It was not without its critics, but the film’s success lay in its ability to stay true to Trek’s optimistic core while revamping its aesthetic for contemporary audiences.

Around the same time, the Star Wars franchise had recently wrapped up its prequel trilogy, which left fans divided. George Lucas’ prequels dared to expand the universe, diving into politics and the fall of a hero, but their execution was marred by wooden dialogue, over-reliance on CGI, and an inability to recapture the magic of the originals. Fans who grew up with the original trilogy were often disheartened, but younger audiences—myself included—found intrigue in the story, despite its flaws.

Reflecting on these two franchises, 2009 marked an inflection point. Star Trek reminded us that a bold reimagining could energize a beloved series. This fresh take on Trek was bittersweet for many Star Wars fans, who wondered what their own galaxy far, far away might have looked like with a similar treatment. Not a reboot, but perhaps a leap forward in the timeline—something akin to the Legacy comics, which explore the distant descendants of Luke Skywalker. Instead of prequels, imagine a saga that expanded on the mystery of the Force, the resilience of a crumbling galaxy, and the weight of legacy, all with fresh faces and new stakes.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy, which began in 2015, attempted to reinvigorate the franchise in much the same way Abrams rebooted Star Trek. However, its inconsistent tone and direction alienated large swaths of the fandom. While the sequels brought stunning visuals and nostalgia-driven moments, they lacked the cohesion and narrative innovation that could have propelled the franchise into new territory.

So, which do I prefer—Star Trek or Star Wars? The answer changes depending on the lens through which I view them. If I want a story of hope, exploration, and the triumph of diplomacy, Star Trek wins. If I crave mythic storytelling, epic battles, and a universe filled with wonder, I turn to Star Wars.

Ultimately, the success of both franchises hinges on the same principle: respect the core elements that made them beloved while daring to push boundaries. If there’s one lesson to be learned from their evolution, it’s that nostalgia should not be the guiding star. Both galaxies deserve thoughtful stories that build on their legacies, rather than relying on them as a crutch. As a fan, I’ll always be ready to boldly go—or feel the Force—wherever these universes take us next.
